Opening Week (Sorta) In NFL

Well sort of after all it is the preseason but for the various sports networks it’s the run up to Broadway.

Just finished reading about Tony Kornhauser and his antics in a dry run Friday night with the new MNF crew Joe Thiesman and the god of play by play Mike Tirico who is a Michigan boy and has done everything right as an announcer as well as having the golden pipes of a Gowdy, Enberg or Scully. You know you’re in for a decent three hours when Mike gives you a wink and says hello.

The spotlight of course is on Tony though cause he is a goof and has idiosyncrasies that are charming and interesting to watch. ZuD missed Monday’s game for some malady I have yet to claim so I can’t speak directly about how it went. But like a lot of sports coverage it just a comfort to know they are on.

I didn’t see the second run of Madden & Michaels nor the premiere of the Bus at halftime but I am sure the graphics were sweet and the sound was on cue. Part of being a sports media junkie is knowing when the karmic haze mixes just right with the stadium lights and the technical director has the right aura button pressed. Inevitably that is when the regular season starts and the games mean something. As of yet they are elaborate practice ballets for crews of 150 people and equipment worth millions who live and die for ‘the shot.’

You know the shot? When a great play just was run and the crowds gone nuts and the replay hits and freezes on a player, fan or some other intangible object that freezes the sequence for eternity. The bitch of course, if one can bitch about football having returned, is these karmic freze frames only appear once or twice in a 4 hour slice of time and usually just on one or two games so in a football weekend where you try to witness 12 college and a half dozen Pro games it is a lot of work for the viewer to capture.

Must be akin to butterfly catching, a long drawn out day, grueling in its demands, yet so fulfilling when the day is done.

Jobs vs. Gates Two

Boy oh boy now that I have deemed myself the Techno dude, the Pressure is ON!

I no sooner put up this new moniker ‘ZuDfunck The Technologist’ and Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are calling ol’ ZuD. Not that I mind the distinction I just worry about the paparazzi! Besides aren’t they both in considerable turmoil within their own camps. The SEC with Apple and the decline of Windows overall must be making them both nervous about having ZuD in their corner…

Well for the sake of objective blogging I must decline their overtures. I mean what would you guys think if I sold out like that? It’s bad enough I sold out to every ticket broker in North America and Europe and the AdSense banners are a bit obtrusive but a man must retain his editorial principles and only be swayed by operating system platforms when I truly am swayed.

• A little background here I switched to Macs in March of 2005 and have never been delighted but as of late these little handheld PC’s have been playing on me.

And that hasn’t changed since 1970. We must remain neutral in all product rollouts just so we get the kind of pleading we have recently gotten from Jobs and Gates. We will reserve our purchase to when a Duo Core handheld unit becomes available or when the overwhelming urge overtakes logic!

NFL on NBC

So it all started anew yesterday. The Hall of Fame game was on NBC’s Sunday Night Football. John and Al, Bob and Chris… were there.

The graphics were sweet especially the Raider colors came across beautifully mixed with the blacks of NBC’s graphics…

I could of sworn my NBC affiliate here in Detroit was coming in clearer, but that was probably just the techno rush of having football back on television!

And it is definitely back on starting this Thursday the 10th of August there will be some 52 games televised on NFL network and a dozen or so on national TV.

The wait is always tougher but the return is always sweeter as the gap between football seasons lessens.

Chevy HHR & XM Radio

With my purchase of my beautiful Chevy HHR I have been able to sample XM radio for the first time and although I am disappointed with the overall fidelity of the sound I am floored by the variety of the programming…

The music covers genres and sub genres I didn’t know had an audience and the absence of commercials is a pure treat. I go to the local AM radio for traffic and am over whelmed by the ads and promos that endlessly flow.

The cable channels are well represented and when football season comes I will have a choice of 3 or 4 providers for scores and highlights all in the comfort of my stylish HHR.
